¡Y todo cambió en marzo de 2020! Tras comenzar a abrirse el confinamiento nos compramos una furgoneta de segunda mano para aprovechar a disfrutar de Canarias unos meses y luego venderla. Yo ya conocía Canarias, pero fue una gran oportunidad poder pasar periodos de dos o tres semanas en cada Isla. Me alegró ver que Canarias es un paraíso de interminables atractivos.
Pero contra pronóstico, en vez de venderla, la metimos en el ferry y nos fuimos a Huelva con ganas de explorar algo de Europa que yo tanto desconozco.
Para muchos, un viaje en barco de dos dias es una pesadilla a evitar. No obstante, ya es la tercera vez que lo hago y en todas las ocasiones el tiempo ha volado entre lecturas al sol, preparativos compartidos,... ¡Piscina!
Desde el principio decidimos movernos por zonas no muy populares para evitar aglomeraciones estivales. Así que nos decantamos por recorrer Extremadura, Castilla y León, Aragón, hasta llegar a Cataluña.
Tras terminar el periplo peninsular, me queda una idea clara: ¡Qué bonita es España y qué amable sus gentes! Sin dudarlo nos podríamos pasar varios años viajando por este hermoso país sin dejar de disfrutar de sus infinitos atractivos. No obstante, como yo tengo muchas ganas de conocer -por fin- el resto de Europa, fuimos ligeros y en 2 semanas ya estabamos en Cataluña.
Desde el principio disfrutar de nuestra extraordinaria gastronomía era un privilegio irrenunciable. Jamón en Jabugo, cerezas en Jerte, gazpacho en Huelva....
Una cosa que me sorprendió fue la facilidad que teníamos para encontrar lugares extraordinarios para cocinar por la tarde, pasar la noche y desayunar. Muchos de ellos junto a embalses o arroyos y sin nadie alrededor. ¡No se podía pedir más!
Otro gran atractivo de la ruta fue la inmersión en una historia de la que carecemos en Canarias: las ruinas romanas de Augusta Emérita, las ciudades medievales como Cáceres, Plasencia, etc. Pero no sólo esos enclaves destacados de nuestra geografía, sino los pequeños pueblos anónimos de Castilla, Aragón, etc. Esa España vaciada con sus gentes amables -cuando las encuentras-
Se va terminando la primera parte del viaje y estamos enormemente agradecidos de cómo ha ido. Veremos qué nos depara el resto del camino.

Back on the road!

Everything changed in March 2020! After the lockdown began to open, we bought a second-hand van to enjoy the Canary Islands for a few months and sell it after that. I already knew Canary Islands, but it was a great opportunity to spend periods of two or three weeks on each island. I was happy to see that the Canary Islands are a paradise of endless attractions.
But instead of selling it, we decided to go by ferry to Huelva looking forward to explore a little bit of Europe that I almost don't know at all.
For many people, a two-days boat trip is a nightmare to avoid. However, this is the third time I have done it and every time, hours have flown readings in the sunshine, sharings preparations, ... swimming in the pool!
From the beginning we wanted to move around not very popular areas to avoid summer crowds. So we decided to travel through Extremadura, Castilla y León, Aragon, until we reached Catalonia.
After finishing the mainland journey, I have a clear idea: How beautiful Spain is and how friendly its people! Without hesitation, we could spend several years traveling through this amazing country while enjoying its never-ending attractions. However, as I really want to know -finally- a little bit of the rest of Europe, we were fast and in 2 weeks we already reached Catalonia.

From the beginning, enjoying our extraordinary gastronomy was an important privilege and goal. Ham in Jabugo village, cherries in Jerte Valley, gazpacho in Huelva ...
One thing that surprised me was how easy it was to find nice places to cook in the late afternoon, stay overnight, and have breakfast. Many of them next to lakes or streams and with no one around. You could not ask for more!
Another great attraction of the route was diving in a history that we lack in the Canary Islands: the Roman ruins of Augusta Emerita -Merida-, middle ages cities such as Cáceres, Plasencia, etc. But not only those outstanding places of our geography, but the small anonymous towns of Castilla, Aragon, etc. The so call "Empty Spain" with its kind people -when you find them-
